Significant cultural innovations emerged between the 16th and 17th centuries in the Jewish community of Mantova. Here, for the first time in the world, the foundational texts of the Qabbalah, Jewish mysticism, were published. Additionally, Mantova is known for Salomone Rossi's celebrated “Songs of Solomon,” considered the first example worldwide of polyphonic music printed with Hebrew texts.
On Friday, November 8, at 8:45 PM, there will be an opportunity to attend, for the first time in its entirety and in Italian, “A Pleasant Marriage Comedy” by Leone de’ Sommi. This brilliant Renaissance comedy about marriage will be presented in the stunning setting of the Teatro all’Antica in Sabbioneta. Originally written in Hebrew, it represents the first theatrical work in the world composed in this language. The stage adaptation is by Giorgio Pavesi, based on the translation by Erica Baricci.
The performance will be staged by the theater group “Il palcaccio” from San Giorgio di Mantova and the dance group “Step by Step - Professional Dance Center” from San Benedetto Po, with choreography by Vanna Mantovani and direction by Gabriele Bussolotti. This event is part of the series “Judaism on the Sixth Day – Evening Meetings on Jewish Culture” organized by the association “Man Tovà – the City of Good Manna” of Mantova.
Admission is free and open to all.
